During 2010, some 52 million Americans went without health insurance, compared to 38 million in 2001.There are only 309 million people in the United States. This means that one-sixth of the US population went without insurance last year. Something is very, very wrong with this picture.

From 1978 until a few years ago when I qualified for Medicare I was one of those who did not have insurance. Yes, I was lucky that I was healthy and suffered no major medical event. The cost of insurance was so high it seemed better to just self insure, but I repeat...I was very lucky.
You're right, you were lucky. And that's the thing -- everything has become a crapshoot and nothing is guaranteed. To think that this is happening here. It's just amazing.
