Obama did good

There's a lot wrong with this president, but what he said about Trayvon Martin and George Zimmerman yesterday was perfect. Credit where credit is due.

When President Obama speaks out and says that he could have been Trayvon Martin I think he might be playing us just a little bit.

Obama was born in Hawaii and except for the time he lived in Indonesia from age six to ten, he was in Hawaii being raised by either his mother or grandmother. From 5th grade to high school graduation he attended, with the help of a scholarship, the very exclusive and private Punahou School.

The President has commented in the past that, "The opportunity that Hawaii offered—to experience a variety of cultures in a climate of mutual respect—became an integral part of my world view, and a basis for the values that I hold most dear."

Speaking out now and embracing the black mantle is ‘too little too late’. His words would have been more impressive if they had been said when he was still facing another election.

I don't think a black person can be insulated from racism, any more than a gay person can be insulated from homophobia. We all know, if we are in these groups, what that feels like. I found his words authentic. They were necessary and much appreciated.
