The nicest time change brings extra sleep

Have you heard? We're not saving daylight anymore. So if you see any, throw it out. It's just garbage now.

I'm pretty happy about this. I love when it gets dark before 5 pm. It makes the night seem expansive and exciting. Why, anything could happen at night. You know that's not true of the daytime. Daytime: bor-ing. Nighttime: fascinating.

So I approve of the time change. And this year, it's working to my advantage. I slipped into a late schedule by watching the baseball playoff games. Why they have to start at 8 pm, I don't know. But it made me go to sleep late and it's hard to get back on a normal sleep schedule.

But now that we're throwing daylight out, I'm already waking up at a reasonable hour. So I'm happy as a clam. How did it go for you? Longing for summer? Tch, tch, tch. But don't worry. It'll come back, and when it does, it'll be baseball season again!

Sweet!

Okay, that was painful

Not only did we lose an hour last night, but I had insomnia. Just what you want when you're going to experience a short night anyway.

So as it turned out, my eyes were open at the exact moment when the universe ripped the hour away. You should have seen it! It was torn from the clock and thrown bloody out onto the snow. Sheesh. Brutal! And this morning, it's gone! There isn't even a mark in the snow to tell the tale. But I was there; I know.

So, little sleep for me. How did you fare? A tad sleepy today? Do tell.

They should do something about the light

Here we go again. It's time to set the clocks ahead and bring back the light. As a longstanding member of the Curmudgeon Party, I protest. How dare they cancel evening darkness without my permission?

I know people enjoy daylight savings time. It means they can leave work at 5 pm and still have an opportunity to enjoy the day. And there's something to this, I must admit. But it pales next to the lost opportunity to bask in the darkness and banish light's glare from our precious computer screens.

I used to love leaving work when it was already dark at 4:45 pm. Just loved it. As far as I'm concerned, nighttime is the real time. It's when our dreams come out to play. Everything comes to life then, including us. When the lights are extinguished, life is flush with excitement and possibilities.

So here's what I suggest. Let's limit the daylight to certain hours and leave it that way all year round. I say we let the light shine from 7 am until 3:30 pm (so the kiddies can get home from school). And then darkness falls abruptly. No more of that twilight nonsense; it comes down like a curtain. Boom.

I mean, what do you like better? Day or night? I rest my case.

Drive-in theaters

There's an article in the Sunday NYT about the resurgence of drive-in movie theaters in California. I remember them as being a ton of fun, back in the day. (And you could smoke dope in your car, which the article doesn't mention. Just saying. It was the 60s, after all.)

In discussing the downfall of these popular attractions, the article mentioned something I'd never thought about. It makes perfect sense:
The solidification of daylight saving time in the 1960s contributed to the drive-in’s downfall, forcing later starting times.
